Booklife

Jeff VanderMeer’s Booklife has had a profound effect on the way I view my writing career. As such, I am following the books advice on goals and planning, adding public accountability by posting it here.

My Mission Statement

I want to write the best stories that I can, and continually challenge myself to grow creatively. I believe fiction should be as diverse as the real world and that should be represented in my work. I want to earn the respected member of the SFF community that I love through my words and my actions. I will continue to pay it forward, to give and share what I can, for the betterment of us all.

I’m taking a slightly modified approach to what the book suggests. I don’t believe in setting goals for things beyond my scope of control. I’ve created a separate list of career achievements — things that I consider to be milestones that I will document as they happen.

Achievements – Things I want to accomplish in my career as a writer but out outside of my direct sphere of control.

Weekly Tasks – Things I am working on this week.

Monthly Tasks – Things I am working on this month.

One-Year Plan – Things I plan to accomplish in the year 2010.

Five-Year Plan – Things I hope to accomplish by the end of the year 2015.
